The GCR Committee

The St. Antony's College Graduate Common Room (GCR) Committee is a near-fully autonomous student union within St. Antony's College. Our committee members are elected through by-election in Michaelmas and Hilary terms each year.

A Common Room unlike any other:

The GCR's establishment is protected by the college bylaws, and is designed to amplify our post-graduate student body's voice in the college operations. Unique to our college, the President of the St. Antony's GCR serves as a senior executive-equivalent member of the college, and is a voting member of the college Management Executive Team (MET) meetings and Governing Body (GB) meetings.

Unlike any other Oxford college, where the graduate student common room often serves as secondary to the Junior Common Room (undergraduate) or only attends senior-level meetings as a non-voting member, the St. Antony's GCR participates in every level of decision-making at the college. As a result of this structural representation, our college is constantly listening to and implementing the feedback of its students.

The GCR consists of five subcommittees: The Administrative Committee, the Academic Affairs Committee, the Social Affairs Committee, the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, and the Welfare Affairs Committee.

The Administrative Committee

The Administration Committee consists of the President, the Secretary, the Treasurer, and the Chair. This committee maintains the operation of the GCR Committee and enforces the procedural compliance with our constitution and bylaws.

The Academic Affairs Committee

Led by the Vice Presidents of Academic Affairs, this committee is in charge of all academically-driven events hosted by the GCR. The committee frequently invites prominent speakers to the college and hosts the iconic Language Immersion Night each week for students to practice various languages with native speakers. At any given week, St. Antony's College hosts more academic events than all other Oxford colleges combined.

The Social Affairs Committee

Thanks to this committee, St. Antony's College carries the reputation for having the most active post-grad college life in Oxford. Led by the Vice Presidents of Social Affairs, this committee hosts engaging weekly social events, from small "Sip&Paint" events at the college bar to buying out the biggest venues in Oxford for megabops. This committee is also in charge of planning home formals and exchange formals with other Oxford and Cambridge colleges.

The EDI Affairs Committee

The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Affair committee is in charge of providing inclusive and diverse events at the GCR. The committee consists of Black and Minority Ethnicity (BME) Officers, WomenX Officers, LGBTQ+ Officers, Faith&Culture Officers, and Disability&Inclusion Officers. Each term, the EDI team hosts a university-wide inclusion-based themed formal. These formals are typically BME Formal (Michaelmas), WomenX Formal (Hilary), and LGBTQ+ Formal (Trinity).

The Welfare Affairs Committee

Your well-being is serious business! Our Welfare Affairs team is here to provide you with the space (and snacks) to decompress and connect each week. Our iconic Sunday Welfare Tea is attended by hundreds each term and is known for providing the best afternoon tea collection in town. During Trinity Term, the committee hosts the Mental Health Awareness Week to provide a week-long programme to support our students during the exam and dissertation season.
